One fine morning, Finn Mac Cool rose early and went out on the dew of the grass. Oisin, his son, and Dering the druid saw him there in the dawn and went to speak to him.
'This is early rising, Finn' said Oisin.
'Not without cause,' said Finn. 'Since my wife died from me, there is no quiet sleep for me.'
'There is remedy for that,' said Oisin. 'Throw your glance on the most or least girl in all green Ireland and we will bring her to you for your wife.'
'I myself know a worthy woman,' said Dering. 'It is Grainne, the daughter of King Cormac Mac Art. She is the woman of the best look and shape and speech in all Ireland.'
'There is strife between Cormac and myself,' said Finn. 'It might please him to refuse me in my person. But go the two of you and ask for his daughter, for he may speak better to you than to me.'
