Then the two of them went to Tara to see the king, and they asked for his daughter Grainne in marriage for Finn Mac Cool, captain of the Fianna.

 

'There is not a champion in Ireland,' replied the king, 'who has not been refused by Grainne. But I will take you and you will find the answer from her own mouth.'

 

Cormac took the messengers to the women's house and sat in the seat beside his daughter.

 

'Here, Grainne,' he said, 'are two of the people of Finn, who would have you for Finn's wife. What say you?'

 

'If he is fit to be your son-in-law,' said she, 'then why should he not be my husband?'

 

They were satisfied with that answer, and a time was appointed in two weeks for Finn to come to Tara. Finn collected seven battalions of the Fianna from every part of Allen in Leinster, and they went bravely in bands and troops into Tara. The wedding feast was prepared in the great hall, and the people of Cormac and the people of Finn were seated in their places.
