As the two chiefs returned to Finn they called out. 'We have killed the surly giant, and we bring you the berries of the rowan tree. Let that be for your satisfaction, and now let us go in peace.'
But when they handed the berries to Finn, he put them to his nose.
'These berries,' he said, 'have the smell of Diarmuid on them. He plucked them, not you. And sure I am that he killed the surly giant. I will go now and see for myself.'
Finn summoned the seven battalions of the Fianna and away they all marched to the wood of Dubhros. They saw that the rowan was unguarded and they filled themselves with the berries as much as they pleased. In the hot sun of noon they lay down to rest, while Diarmuid and Grainne were in the nest of the giant at the top of the tree.
